Wildlife habitat restoration project

We are planning a wildlife habitat restoration project on the Eastern portion of the property, beginning January 7, 2019.  The goals are:
  1. To restore and improve habitat for birds and other wildlife, following recommendations from an Audubon Vermont study of this property.  (See previous blog post on this topic.)
  2. To reduce invasive shrubs (especially Glossy Buckthorn; see photos below), which are rampant in the areas to be cut
  3. To open up views from many of the walking trails
The work will be done by a hired contractor with a "brontosaurus" machine, which chews up the trees and shrubs and distributes wood chips in a layer that will decompose and enrich the soil.

My school also has a goal of restoring the habitat in our local town. As far as I know, my fellow teachers are planning to hire a contractor to do the job for us. I'm glad that you mentioned about shrubs because we want to introduce local flora and reduce the number of invasive shrubs as well so I hope that it will be a success.

Tom and Patricia Norton have owned this land since June 2013.  We live in Thetford, VT, and love coming to Dothan Brook frequently to explore the trails, to watch the Brook, and to see how many different species of plants and animals we can find.  We are pleased to welcome you to this beautiful land.
